New Mexico passes bill allowing same-day voter registration
The New Mexico legislature passed a bill Thursday that would allow same-day voter registration in the state.
The Associated Press reported Friday that the New Mexico House and Senate agreed to a final version of the measure that would also expand automated registration services to state agencies.
{mosads}The legislation now heads to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s (D) desk for her signature.
Under New Mexico’s current law, voter registration closes 28 days before Election Day.
If passed, New Mexico would join 17 other states and the District of Columbia in offering same-day voter registration.
New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver (D) had advocated for the change as a way to boost voter participation.
A number of Democratic lawmakers across the county have pushed to expand voter access, including proposing legislation to adopt same-day voter registration.
