Gavin Newsom calls on Trump to resign following ‘s—hole’ remarks

California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) called on President Trump to resign over his reported labeling of Haiti, El Salvador and African countries as “shithole countries” in an Oval Office meeting.

“You’re a joke and a racist, President Donald J. Trump,” Newsom wrote on Facebook. “Resign.”

The former San Francisco mayor joined a host of lawmakers, media figures and world leaders slamming Trump for the vulgar remarks, which he reportedly made during a meeting with bipartisan lawmakers on immigration this week.

In a statement Thursday, the White House did not deny Trump’s comments.

Trump denied the remarks Friday, saying he did not say “anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country.”

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), who attended the meeting with Trump, said the president’s denials were “not true,” and that Trump “said these hate-filled things, and he said them repeatedly.”

Other California Democrats have called on Trump to step down following the remarks.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) accused Trump of “promoting a homogenous, white society” with his comments, adding “there’s no room for racism in the Oval Office.”

“If the president can’t control himself and lead this country with the authority, dignity and leadership it requires, then he shouldn’t be the president,” she said.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) called for Trump’s impeachment over the comments, pushing Congress to “impeach him without delay” in a lengthy statement.

Newsom, 50, who is running in the 2018 California governor’s race, has been floated as a possible Democratic candidate for president in 2020.
