Ted Cruz celebrates airline offering cheap flights from Houston to Cancun

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) tweeted his excitement at a report that a low-cost airline is now offering cheap flights from Houston to Cancun.

“Excited to travel again?” a tweet from ABC13 Houston on Tuesday read. “This airline can hook you up with a cheap flight to sunny Cancun or even Las Vegas!”

“Awesome!” Cruz responded in a tweet of his own.

The senator found himself in the middle of a firestorm earlier this year after he was spotted at an airport traveling to Cancun during a natural disaster in his home state of Texas, earning him the nickname “Cancun Cruz.”

Cruz said at the time that his daughters wanted to leave the country during the ice storm that knocked out power, water and heat to thousands in the state and that he went with them because he was trying to be “a dad.”

He later said it was a mistake to go on the trip.

“It was obviously a mistake. In hindsight, I wouldn’t have done it,” he said. “And all of us have made decisions — when you got two girls who have been cold for two days and haven’t had heat or power and they’re saying, ‘Hey, look. We don’t have school. Why don’t we go? Let’s get out of here.'”
