READ: Breakdown of Senate GOP’s police reform bill
Senate Republicans on Wednesday unveiled the GOP police reform proposal.
The bill includes incentivizing police departments to ban chokeholds, penalties for officers not using body cameras, new reporting requirements on the use of force by officers, required reporting on no-knock search warrants, increased penalties for false police reports and making lynching a federal crime.
Senate Republicans plan to bring the bill up for a vote next week.
House Democrats last week unveiled their own police reform legislation, and President Trump signed a separate executive order on related issues Tuesday.
Democrats have indicated they don’t think Republican actions go far enough to address needed reform, likely signaling a battle ahead over competing legislation.
Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), who led development of the legislation, released an analysis of the contents of the bill that you can read below.
