Democratic senator calls on Giuliani to testify over Ukraine scandal

New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D) called on President Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani to testify before the Senate Foreign Relations committee in response to building accusations about his dealings with Ukraine, which he said were on behalf of the Trump administration.

“Rudy Giuliani needs to explain this under oath. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee should call a hearing ASAP,” Shaheen, who serves on the Republican-controlled committee, tweeted Wednesday.

Shaheen retweeted a Tuesday night clip from Fox News, when Giuliani answered questions from host Laura Ingraham on his dealings with Ukraine. He said he met with a representative of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky at the behest of the U.S. State Department.

{mosads} “You know who I did it at the request of? The State Department. I never talked to a Ukrainian official until the State Department called me and asked me to do it, and then I reported every conversation back to them,” Giuliani said Tuesday night.

“I’m a pretty good lawyer, just a country lawyer, but it’s all here, right here,” Giuliani continued, gesturing to his cellphone. “The first call from the State Department, the debriefing of the State Department.”

Giuliani’s appearance came hours after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) opened a formal impeachment inquiry into the president focused on Trump’s reported dealings with Ukraine.

The Hill has reached out to Shaheen’s office for comment.
