Lou Dobbs lashes out at Romney over Trump op-ed: ‘He is a treacherous fool’

Fox Business Network host Lou Dobbs on Wednesday denounced incoming GOP Sen. Mitt Romney (Utah) over his criticism of President Trump, calling him a “treacherous fool.”

“He’s reprehensible. I can’t even believe the people of Utah elected this creep,” Dobbs said on Fox Business Network’s “Lou Dobbs Tonight.”

{mosads}”He is a fool,” Dobbs later continued. “He is also absolutely a treacherous fool.

“And what he’s done to the people of Utah, he is an embarrassment to the state. And that’s the way it’s going to be, because he’s obviously committed to his role as the smallest man in the Senate.”

Romney on Tuesday declared that Trump had “not risen to the mantle” of the presidency in an op-ed for The Washington Post.

“With the nation so divided, resentful and angry, presidential leadership in qualities of character is indispensable. And it is in this province where the incumbent’s shortfall has been most glaring,” Romney wrote.

He also argued that in order for the U.S. “to reassume” its “leadership in world politics, we must repair failings in our politics at home.”

“That project begins, of course, with the highest office once again acting to inspire and unite us,” he said.

Trump responded to the critiques by calling on Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential candidate, to be more of a “team player.”

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel, Romney’s niece, also called the op-ed “disappointing and unproductive.”

Romney was elected in November and will replace the retiring Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah). He is set to be sworn in as Utah’s junior senator on Thursday.

Romney’s op-ed led to some speculation that he may have his sights set on challenging Trump in 2020. But the incoming senator ruled out that possibility in an interview later on Wednesday.

“I acknowledged the president was successful and I was not,” Romney said on CNN. “He did something I couldn’t do. He won, and I recognize that and appreciate that. But no, I’m not running again and we’ll see whether someone else does in a Republican primary or not.”
