Leahy says he ‘must be doing something right’ for Trump to attack him

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) fired back at President Trump on Wednesday, saying he “must be doing something right” to earn the president’s barbs towards him at a rally Tuesday night.

“I must be doing something right,” Leahy said. “By now just about everyone who stands up to this president has been targeted for his bogus attacks and smears.”

Trump went after Leahy at a rally Tuesday night, mocking the senator’s focus on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s drinking habits in high school and college during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last Thursday.

Kavanaugh said that he drank beer in high school and college but denied ever blacking out from drinking.

“Patrick Leahy, oh he’s never had a drink in his life. Check it out. Look under Patrick Leahy slash Drink,” Trump said, before launching into a mocking imitation of Leahy’s statements towards Kavanaugh. “How dare you have a beer while you’re in high school! How dare you!”

{mosads} The hearing last week was held after college professor Christine Blasey Ford accused Kavanaugh of attempting to sexually assault her at a high school party in the early 1980s.

Kavanaugh has unequivocally denied the claim.

Leahy also expressed “outrage” after Trump mocked Ford at the rally on Tuesday.

Trump’s “shameful mocking of a sexual assault victim is by far the biggest outrage,” Leahy said.

At the rally, Trump mocked Ford’s testimony.

“How did you get home?” Trump said, “‘I don’t remember.’ ‘How’d you get there?’ ‘I don’t remember.’ ‘Where is the place?’ I don’t remember.’ ‘How many years ago was it?’ ‘I don’t know.'”

“‘What neighborhood was it in?'” he continued, as the crowd cheered and clapped. “‘I don’t know.’ ‘Where’s the house?’ ‘I don’t know.’ ‘Upstairs, downstairs, where was it?’ ‘I don’t know, but I had one beer.’ ‘That’s the only thing I remember.'”

Ford has been unable to say where or when the party happened as well as what she did before or after, though she said on Thursday that she had only one beer at the party and that Kavanaugh was her attacker.”
