Lawmakers congratulate Duckworth on birth of daughter

Lawmakers took to Twitter to congratulate their colleague Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) after the senator gave birth to a daughter.

Duckworth gave birth to Maile Pearl Bowlsbey, her second child, on Monday, becoming the first senator in history to give birth while in office.

Fellow Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.) was among the first to tweet her well wishes, writing, “Welcome to the world Maile Pearl!”

“You are already much loved, and your mommy and many of her friends are doing their very best to make this a better world for you,” Warren tweeted. “We can’t wait to meet you.” {mosads}

Warren has been a vocal supporter of Duckworth during her pregnancy, vowing to help her in her fight to change the Senate rules so that she can bring her baby on the Senate floor. The rules prevent members from sponsoring legislation or voting while on maternity leave.

“I call dibs on holding @tammyduckworth‘s baby while she’s voting – and fighting to change the Senate’s dumb rules so I don’t have to,” Warren tweeted in February.

On the other side of the aisle, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) also tweeted a message of congratulations to Duckworth.

“Very glad to see Mom and Baby doing well,” he wrote. “God bless.”

Several other lawmakers celebrated the news in tweets:
