Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Monday said he doesn’t believe President Trump is going to fire special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian election interference and possible collusion between Trump’s campaign and Moscow.
“The president said that he believes Mr. Mueller would treat him fairly, I also believe that,” Graham said on “The View.”
“I think we should all want to protect somebody like Mr. Mueller. I don’t think President Trump is going to fire Mr. Mueller. There is no reason to fire Mr. Mueller, let Mr. Mueller do his job and Mr. Trump, our president, should focus on his day job,” Graham added.
{mosads}Trump has repeatedly downplayed Mueller’s investigation, calling it a “witch hunt” and claiming there is no evidence of collusion. He has previously said he’s not considering firing Mueller.
Several Republican lawmakers have in recent weeks questioned the integrity of Mueller’s investigation, however, pointing to anti-Trump text messages sent by a former member of Mueller’s team.
Mueller’s investigation has thus far led to two indictments and two guilty pleas.
Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his former associate, Richard Gates, were indicted last year on money laundering and tax fraud charges, among others.
Former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn and former campaign policy adviser George Papadopoulos both pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI.
