WarnerMedia and Discovery announce new name of soon-to-be-combined companies
WarnerMedia and Discovery have announced the name of their new company, a result of a merger between the two, CNN reports.
Warner Bros. Discovery was selected as the name, which Discovery CEO David Zaslav, also the CEO of the new company, shared with employees Tuesday during a conversation hosted by WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar.
“We thought we need to represent, really, who are we? Who are we? What’s our belief system? What’s important to us? What do we get up and do every day,” Zaslav reportedly said.
He also said that the iconic nature of the “Warner Brothers” name inspired the choice.
“And we thought about Warner Brothers and the fact that Warner Brothers is something that the greatest content that over the last 98 years that has been produced. Most of it has been produced where at the end you see the word Warner Brothers. It’s imprinted in all of us and what it says is it makes you smile, and it says this is a creative content company.”
Zaslav added, “This is where the best and the brightest come to tell their stories, and so we wanted to bring back the Brothers.”
The new company’s tagline will be “The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of,” an ode to Warner Bros. movie “The Maltese Falcon,” notes CNN.
AT&T announced the merger between the two companies to create a new publicly traded entertainment company earlier this month. Warners Bros. Discover will focus on streaming, entertainment and news, while AT&T will remain focused on broadband and mobile connectivity.
Warner Bros. Discovery will feature top networks including CNN, HBO, HBO Max, Discovery Channel, Food Network, HGTV, the Science Channel and Animal Planet, among others.
