‘Abolish lasagna’ trends on Twitter after GOP senator’s photoshopped prop poster mocked

Republican Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst went viral on social media after users mocked a poster board she presented while addressing the Senate on Wednesday.

Ernst used the graphic to criticize the policies of the left ahead of President Biden’s first address to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday night.

Ernst’s poster presentation, titled “Liberal Fantasy Island,” was emblazoned with slogans such as “abolish ICE,” “end the filibuster now,” “expand the court” and “defund the police.”

Shortly after Ernst’s remarks were televised, a social media user photoshopped the poster to poke fun at her presentation. The edited version featured altered slogans such as “abolish lasagna,” “only gay people get to go to restaurants” and “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” an ode to the hit Amazon Prime show.

“Abolish lasagna” began trending on Twitter, causing the social platform to provide an explainer.

However, the trend still sparked confusion among some users, leading fact-checking website Snopes to create a page dispelling the notion that Ernst’s poster actually called for abolishing lasagna.

Ernst was one of many Republicans to speak to the Senate ahead of Biden’s address.
