US Olympic team’s closing ceremony outfits mocked after debut

Team USA’s Tokyo Olympics closing ceremony outfits were unveiled Wednesday to criticism from many social media users.

The ensembles, designed by longtime official Olympic uniform designer Ralph Lauren, feature white pants, polo shirts and collared sport jackets with red, white and blue accessories, all emblazoned with the company’s signature polo player logo.

Many Twitter users commented that the uniforms give off an air of wealth and privilege.

Others criticized them for looking race-specific.

The uniforms were ready to go for last year’s games, which were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The pants included in this year’s uniform feature a patch that reads “Team USA” and “2020.”

The AP notes the team’s opening ceremony outfits will be revealed in July ahead of the games, slated to take place July 23 through August 8.

Ralph Lauren’s Olympic retail collection, the revenue of which goes to supporting Team USA, is available for purchase online and in select stores, the AP reports.
