Mary Trump joining group that supports LGBTQ+ female candidates

Mary Trump, former President Trump’s niece, is set to join the board of an organization that supports LGBTQ+ and female candidates running for office.

Trump says that her decision to join LPAC, which is an organization that is devoted to increasing the number of LGBTQ women in office, was prompted by the destruction she says she saw her uncle cause to America’s democracy, according to Politico.

“We came really close to losing our democracy — and I may sound melodramatic but it happens to be true,” Trump, who has become an outspoken critic of her uncle, told the outlet. “I feel it’s the beginning of the fight because we came so close to losing everything, and we’re also faced with a situation in which there’s this fight over the filibuster, and it’s important we understand this is about representation across the board.”

Prior to her uncle’s election to the highest office in the nation, Trump worked with LPAC. She was asked to return to help the organization ramp up its recruitment of candidates ahead of the 2022 midterm elections and to also raise funds for their campaigns, Politico noted.

LPAC reportedly has previously aided in electing Democratic Sens. Tammy Baldwin (Wis.) and Kyrsten Sinema (Ariz.) as well as Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D).

Currently, there are only 11 openly LGBTQ members of Congress, Politico reported.

“If it’s only men making decisions about women’s issues or straight people making decisions about LGBTQ issues, then that’s where we run into problems, and we’ve seen this,” Trump told the outlet.
