Clemson Tigers defensive end Justin Foster said in a tweet Wednesday that he is retiring from football to focus on his recovery from his coronavirus diagnosis over the summer.

“With sadness but no regret, I have decided it is in my best interest to call it a career and hang up football,” Foster wrote.

Foster said his recovery from COVID-19 has been difficult due to asthma and allergies that already affected his breathing during physical activity.

“The combination of these conditions, along with contracting COVID, made for a severe difficulty to perform physically,” he said. “While my situation has improved, I am not in a position now, nor do I see that position soon, to step back on the field.”

Foster missed his whole 2020 season as he focused on his recovery. The decision to leave came as he consulted medical professionals during the last months and worked with them on a long-term plan.

He had been expected to start this season after he received an honorable mention All-ACC selection in 2019, according to Bleacher Report.

“He had a very tough fall,” said Dabo Swinney, Clemson’s head coach. “He’s always had challenges with [asthma and allergies] but when he got COVID last summer, that really set him back.”

Although many only experience short-term issues with the coronavirus, others have lasting effects and symptoms.

Swinney said he told Foster that he could stay on the team until he was healthy enough to play, but Foster declined and said he had another job opportunity.

“I have great pride and gratitude as I reflect on my experiences in this program and excitement and confidence for my future,” Foster said.
