Poll: Majority say Trump should be barred from public office

A new poll released Saturday shows a majority of U.S. adults believe former President Trump should be barred from running for public office again. 

Fifty-three percent of U.S. adults polled said Trump should not be allowed to run for public office again, while 50 percent said they would vote to convict Trump in the Senate impeachment trial if they were given the vote, a poll by Ipsos conducted for Reuters found. 

A poll from YouGov and The Economist released Friday also found that 53 percent of people believe Trump should not be allowed to run for office again. 

Many are arguing Trump should not be allowed to run for office again due to his actions and words leading up to the Capitol riot on Jan. 6 that left five people dead. 

The Ipsos-Reuters poll found that 71 percent of U.S. adults believe Trump was partially responsible for the riot. Half of the Republicans who were surveyed in the poll agreed Trump was partially responsible.

Before the riot, Trump had been peddling election fraud conspiracy theories and claiming President Biden did not win the election fairly. He encouraged his followers to “stop the steal” during his Jan. 6 rally that occurred just before the riot. 

Despite arguments that Trump was not directly responsible for the riot, he was impeached by the House and is going through the impeachment process in the Senate. 

Seventy-three percent of those polled said they decided whether Trump should be convicted before the trial began. 

The poll surveyed 998 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
