READ: Trump defense team’s response to impeachment case
Lawyers for former President Trump have released their response to House Democrats’ impeachment case ahead of a trial in the Senate.
The 14-page filing from Trump defense attorneys David Schoen and Bruce Castor argues that it is unconstitutional to impeach a former president and that Trump’s remarks were not directly to blame for the deadly riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6.
The lawyers outlined the defense they will mount next week when the trial begins in the upper chamber. Senators will weigh a single article of impeachment passed by the House last month that accuses Trump of inciting insurrection with his remarks before the Capitol riot.
