Parkland shooting survivor calls on GOP to denounce Rep. Greene after video

Parkland school shooting survivor David Hogg is calling on House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to denounce Rep. Marjorie Greene (R-Ga.) after a video of her heckling him as he is walking toward the U.S. Capitol went viral.

“My message to Kevin McCarthy is this: Take her committee assignments away,” Hogg told Alisyn Camerota on CNN’s “New Day.” “Along with that, also, don’t support her when she runs for reelection again and try to get her primaried.”

“If you say this is not your party, actually call it out and hold her accountable,” Hogg continued. “Republicans always act as if they’re the party of decency, respect, but would the party of decency and respect question whether or not school shootings happened? Would they harass the survivors of these shootings for having a different opinion than them? I don’t think so.”

“And I think that if Kevin McCarthy doesn’t think so either, he needs to actually stand up and do something about this congresswoman,” Hogg concluded. 

“Republicans always act as if they’re the party of decency and respect. But would the party of decency and respect … harass the survivors of these shootings for having different opinions than them?”

McCarthy’s office didn’t immediately return a request for comment from The Hill regarding Hogg’s comments.

Fred Guttenberg, father of one of the 17 people killed in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in 2018, shared a video of Greene trailing Hogg and other survivors who were in D.C. advocating for gun reform, and heckling them.

In the video, Greene can be heard calling Hogg a “coward.”

“Why are you using kids as a barrier? Do you not know how to defend your stance? Look, I’m an American citizen. I’m a gun owner. I have a concealed carry permit, I carry a gun for protection for myself. And you are using your lobby and the money behind it and the kids to try to take away my Second Amendment rights. You don’t have anything to say for yourself? You can’t defend your stance?” Greene asks Hogg, who ignores her.

Guttenberg said the video was taken in 2018 just weeks after the shooting, though it’s not exactly clear when the video was taken.

When Camerota asked Hogg about the video, Hogg said he remembered thinking that he would “keep a straight face” and practice a meditation he does to help cope with PTSD and ADHD. However, he said he “absolutely” felt it was a threat when Greene said she was carrying a gun.

“What I always say to myself, Alisyn, is that if they shoot me they prove my point, and the reality is they can’t kill a movement,” Hogg said.

Greene has faced intense calls to resign after CNN and liberal group Media Matters uncovered social media posts she made prior to running for Congress in which she suggested that school shootings were staged and advocated for violence against Democrats.
