American Airlines starting at-home wine delivery service with its unused product

As alcohol sales have been suspended aboard many airlines during the COVID-19 pandemic, American Airlines has found a way to utilize its unused product by offering a new, at-home wine delivery service, the company announced Thursday.

The new program, called Flagship Cellars, features bottles from the American Airlines wine collection usually served to those who book “Flagship” airline tickets — an upscale ticketing option only available on international and transcontinental flights.

Consumers can choose from individual bottles that range in price from about $13 to $40, a mixed pack starting around $50 and going up to $400 for a champagne case, or opt for the $99 monthly subscription plan. A variety of brands are offered through the program, including Stag’s Leap and Castlenau.

“For wine lovers around the world, wine provides a deeper connection to the places they enjoy visiting,” Alison Taylor, chief customer officer at American Airlines, said in a statement

American Airlines loyalty program members will earn two miles per every dollar spent on the Flagship Cellars program, the statement notes.

“We created Flagship Cellars to provide more ways for customers to enjoy our Flagship wine even if they aren’t flying in one of our premium cabins,” an airline spokesperson told The Hill.

The program was also created as a way of showcasing the airline’s more luxurious flight offerings.

“It also gives them a taste of what you can enjoy in Flagship First or Flagship Business,” an American Airlines spokesperson told CNN.

The company hopes the delivery service will bring in about $40,000 to $50,000 in the next few months, CNN reports.
