Michael Cohen offered job as political consultant, lawyer says
Michael Cohen has been offered a job at an unspecified political action committee to work as a consultant and to make media appearances, a lawyer for President Trump’s former personal attorney and fixer said.
Cohen’s lawyer, Danya Perry, asked U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein in a letter on Monday to approve the move. [Read the letter below.]
“Mr. Cohen has an employment offer from a political action committee to provide consulting services and media appearances,” Perry wrote. “He has provided the offer letter and details to the [residential reentry center] and is awaiting its response.”
Perry added that Cohen needs to meet with his publisher and editor “as quickly as possible” to ensure his book, titled “Disloyal: The True Story of Michael Cohen, Former Personal Attorney to President Donald J. Trump,” comes out before the 2020 election. Late last month, federal prosecutors agreed to lift a gag order on Cohen, allowing him to write the book while he serves his sentence in home confinement and speak to the media.
Cohen pleaded guilty to charges including campaign finance fraud and lying to Congress in 2018. He began speaking out against Trump amid his legal ordeal.
Cohen was released to home confinement in May but was suddenly sent back to prison on July 9 over a dispute with corrections officials over the terms of his release.
Cohen, with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union, sued for his release from prison last month, arguing that the government was retaliating against him for planning to publish his book.
