Houston Rockets star Russell Westbrook buys 650 laptops for students in online classes

Houston Rockets star Russell Westbrook is donating 650 laptops for students in Houston who have gone to online learning due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The nine-time NBA All-Star’s foundation, Why Not?, is spearheading the initiative to help children transitioning to online coursework who may not have the means to afford the required technology, according to USA Today.

“I’m extremely excited to be able to collaborate with Comp-U-Dopt and find ways to be able to impact the youth immediately,” Westbrook said Monday at a press conference with Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner (D). 

Comp-U-Dopt, an ongoing program providing Houston families with nearly 1,000 computers amid the crisis, said 83 percent of recipients are living in households earning less than $35,000 a year.

“The generous gift will allow us to significantly increase our inventory and ensure we can to continue to close the gap for Houston families most in need,” said Colin Dempsey, executive director at Comp-U-Dopt.

Westbrook said the initiative is something he is proud to support through his foundation, adding that he wanted to “bridge the gap” and provide kids access to learning through computers.

“This allows them to be able to continue their education, especially from home. I’m happy to be a part of it,” the former MVP said.

Turner called the donations a “game changer” for students and families going through changes and impacts related to the coronavirus crisis.

“The generous contribution will help young people stay focused on their education at home and until they can return to their classroom,” he said.
