The Mormon Church announced Friday that it is suspending all public services and events worldwide to avoid the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

“Beginning immediately, all public gatherings of Church members are being temporarily suspended worldwide until further notice,” the statement said.

The church suggested local leaders host gatherings electronically where possible.

“Where possible, please conduct any essential leadership meetings via technology,” the statement added. “Specific questions may be referred to local priesthood leaders. Further direction related to other matters will be provided.”

The move comes as a number of governments across the country have banned or restricted large gatherings to prevent the spread of the virus. Organizations and businesses, including the major sports leagues, have followed suit, canceling or suspending events and games.

Yesterday, Catholic churches across Rome were ordered to close amid fears the virus would spread among worshippers.

In a previously identified case in Washington, D.C., an Episcopal priest gave communion to hundreds of people before being diagnosed with the virus.
