Suspicious package shuts down traffic outside Supreme Court

A suspicious package investigation forced the partial closure of at least one entrance to the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday.

{mosads}Police investigating the scene shut down most of First Street NE in front of the building’s main entrance as the investigation was conducted early Tuesday morning. A stretch of road in front of the Library of Congress was also closed.

Officials with the Court’s public information office did not immediately return a request for comment from The Hill, but an officer with the Supreme Court police verified that a suspicious package was being cleared by experts.

A statement sent out by Capitol Police shortly after 10 a.m. said the incident had been cleared without issue.

“The United States Capitol Police and the U.S. Supreme Court Police responded to a suspicious package at First and East Capitol Streets at approximately 8 a.m. The Supreme Court Building remained open and was not evacuated,” the statement read.
