Ex-RNC chairman mocks GOP efforts to stem whistleblower fallout

Former Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele on Monday mocked the GOP’s response to a whistleblower complaint that contributed to the launch of a formal impeachment inquiry into President Trump. 

“On this particular day, the GOP decided on a new strategy to address the #WhistleblowerComplaint,” Steele tweeted, with a gif of a woman trying to sweep away ocean waves.

{mosads}Steele, who served one term as RNC chairman from 2009 to 2011, has criticized Trump before. 

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) last week announced a formal impeachment inquiry after a whistleblower alleged Trump solicited interference from Ukraine into the 2020 election to benefit himself politically. 

The White House released a partial memo of a call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky showing Trump asked the foreign leader to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, a leading 2020 candidate, and his son. 

The whistleblower complaint also alleges the White House asked officials to put the call between the leaders on a highly classified server, instead of the normal system. 

Trump continues to defend the call as being appropriate. 

The RNC has tried to shift the attention away from Trump’s alleged election interference by continuing to point to unfounded allegations that  Biden acted wrongly in dealing with Ukraine while he was vice president.
