Boeing settles initial Lion Air lawsuits for $1.2M apiece: report

Airplane manufacturer Boeing settled its first batch of lawsuits from the October Lion Air 737 Max crash in Indonesia that killed 189 people, giving each family at least $1.2 million, according to Reuters.

Lawyer Fred Wisner said, according to the news outlet, that out of the 17 claims he’s handling related to the crash, 11 have been settled. The monetary amount might be higher in some instances as $1.2 million was for single victims with no dependents. Despite the high monetary payout, Boeing did not admit to any wrongdoing for the plane crash.

{mosads}Boeing is still facing almost 100 lawsuits from the Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max plane that crashed March 10, killing 157 people.

The first wave of settlements happen after federal investigators discovered earlier in the week that the safety inspectors in charge of training the 737 Max pilots were “unqualified.”

All 737 Max planes have been grounded since March 13, which has cost the company an estimated $8 billion. However, Boeing has said it is optimistic that it can get the planes flying again before the end of the year.
