Man suspected of placing rice cookers in NYC subway station taken into custody

A man who police say is suspected of placing rice cookers at a New York City subway station has been taken into custody following a scare over the devices.

New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea tweeted on Saturday that the man police sought for questioning over the abandoned rice cookers had been “apprehended.”

{mosads}The man was taken into police custody early Saturday morning, CNN reported, citing a source with knowledge of the investigation.

No charges have been announced and other details about the individual’s apprehension have not yet been released by police.

CNN reported that the man was taken into custody on a previous warrant unrelated to Friday’s incident.

Authorities scrambled Friday to identify the man after they said he was seen on surveillance video holding one of the rice cookers, which were initially described as suspicious devices.

Rice cookers were left at two locations at a subway station near the World Trade Center, while another one was later discovered on a sidewalk a couple miles away.

While pressure cookers have in the past been turned into bombs, authorities said that those discovered Friday were not explosives, The Associated Press reported.
