David Ortiz shot in Dominican Republic ambush

Former Boston Red Sox all-star David Ortiz is in stable condition after being shot in the Dominican Republic on Sunday.

The retired slugger, who hails from the Dominican Republic, is recovering from surgery after being shot nearly point-blank at a bar in East Santo Domingo, a national police spokesman told CNN. The bullet didn’t hit any major organs, and Ortiz is said to be in stable condition, The New York Times reports.

{mosads}“He is out of surgery and stable; he is resting,” Ortiz’s father, Leo Ortiz, told the AP. “Big Papi will be around for a long time.”

The gunman allegedly got off a motorcycle and ambushed Ortiz, shooting him at nearly point-blank range and hitting him in the back, The Associated Press reported. A crowd of people at the bar allegedly captured the suspect and beat him.

In a statement posted to Twitter Monday, the Red Sox said, “We have offered David’s family all available resources to aid in his recovery and will continue to keep them in our hearts.”

Dominican television host Jhoel Lopez, who was with Ortiz, also got shot in the leg in the incident, CNN reports.

Multiple people have been detained in connection with the shooting, and one suspect is being treated at a nearby hospital, CNN reports. It isn’t clear if the motorcyclist is among those detained.

Ortiz played 20 years in the MLB, including his final 14 in Boston, where he helped the team win three World Series.
