Protesters carry baby dolls in dog crate to protest detention of migrant children

Protesters carried dog crates filled with baby dolls through the streets of Atlanta on Saturday, as activists gathered to protest the Trump administration policy that led to thousands of migrant children being separated from their parents.

Video captured by CNN showed the dolls stuffed into crates, in what appeared to be a reference to footage that has surfaced in recent weeks of migrants, including children, being held by U.S. officials in fenced-in areas.

The Trump administration has faced severe backlash in recent weeks over its “zero tolerance” immigration policy that seeks to prosecute all adults who cross the southern border illegally.{mosads}

That policy led to thousands of migrant children being separated from their parents at the border before President Trump, bowing to bipartisan pressure, signed an executive order aimed at allowing most migrant families to be detained together.

Activists gathered in more than 700 cities in all 50 states on Saturday to protest the family separations, with the main protest taking place in Washington, D.C., directly across from the White House.

Questions remain about how Trump’s executive order will be implemented due to a previous legal settlement that only allows minors to be detained for a maximum of 20 days.

This week, a federal judge in San Diego ordered the government to quickly reunite migrant children with their families, though it’s not yet clear how officials will meet the court’s deadlines for doing so.
