Dem lawmaker: Trump conceding ‘role as leader of the free world’ after G-7 summit

Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) condemned President Trump on Saturday for abruptly announcing earlier that night that he did not endorse a joint statement by the Group of Seven (G-7) that he had agreed to support earlier in the day. 

“With every brash tweet, President Trump concedes the US’s role as leader of the free world,” Meeks wrote on Twitter.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced earlier on Saturday that all members of the G-7 had signed a joint communique.

{mosads}But Trump tweeted later, following Trudeau’s criticism of U.S. tariffs, that he no longer supported the statement.

“Based on Justin’s false statements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs to our U.S. farmers, workers and companies, I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market!” Trump tweeted.

Trump also criticized Trudeau for acting “meek and mild” during their G-7 meetings. He accused the prime minister of changing his tone after Trump departed the summit for Singapore.

Meeks was among other Democrats who also condemned the move, including Democratic leaders Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
