Joe Lockhart: ‘Coward’ Trump ‘hiding behind lawyers’ from Jan. 6 panel

Former Clinton White House press secretary Joe Lockhart called former president Trump a “coward” who he said is “hiding behind lawyers” from a select congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack by his supporters on the Capitol.

“One would think Trump would want to come to DC and take on the D’s. What a stage to own the libs,” Lockhart, now a CNN political commentator, said in a tweet on Tuesday. “But he won’t because of executive privilege — give me a break he won’t testify because he is a coward. A coward. Afraid and hiding behind lawyers.”

Trump and his legal team filed suit last month to challenge a subpoena from the House investigators seeking records from the National Archives relating to the former president’s time in office, including telephone records and visitor logs as part of the wide-ranging probe into the attack and to what extent Trump and his associates were involved or aware of it.

Trump’s team has claimed the documents were shielded from disclosure based on executive privilege. A federal judge last week denied Trump’s bid, The Hill previously reported, and after an appeal, a second judge granted a temporary injunction to prevent the National Archives from turning over the records and scheduled oral arguments in the case for later in November.

Trump has repeatedly dismissed the congressional probe into the Jan. 6 attack, suggesting the “real insurrection” took place when he lost the 2020 presidential election, a contest he has falsely claimed was rigged against him.

“The Leftist ‘select committee’ has further exposed itself as a partisan sham and waste of taxpayer dollars with a request that’s timed to distract Americans from historic and global catastrophes brought on by the failures of Joe Biden and the Democrats,” Trump said this summer. “These Democrats only have one tired trick—political theater—and their latest request only reinforces that pathetic reality.”

The Jan. 6 committee, which has issued subpoenas for several other close associates and White House officials under Trump, has not set a definite deadline for completing its work.
