McCaskill shares new July 4 family tradition: Watching Capitol riot video

Former Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) said she and her family will start a new Fourth of July tradition on Friday — watching video of the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

McCaskill, an MSNBC contributor, told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” that her family would watch The New York Times’ 40-minute in-depth visual investigation of what led to the riots that led to five deaths.

“We’re going to start a new family tradition in my family,” McCaskill said. “On the Fourth of July and every Fourth of July going forward, we’re going to watch that video The New York Times put together of January 6.”

The Time’s investigation, called “Day of Rage: An In-Depth Look at How a Mob Stormed the Capitol,” provided a deep look into what happened on Jan. 6.

The former senator shared the project to Twitter on Thursday with the caption “I beg you. Please watch this. And don’t forget.”

Among the investigation’s findings, the Times found that rioters were able to breach the Capitol at eight different points.

The investigation also found that most of the rioters were acting individually as opposed to the attack being planned, though some members of militia groups appeared ready for a confrontation. 

McCaskill’s comment garnered less than ideal responses on Twitter. Meghan McCain, co-host of “The View,” tweeted “this is so stupid. Like so stupid.”
