Seven charged in Maradona death

Seven doctors have been charged with the death of soccer legend Diego Maradona, according to an ESPN report on Thursday.

Argentinian prosecutors have charged neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, along with five other medical professionals, with simple homicide with eventual intent in the death of Maradona.

Audio of a private conversation between the medical professionals that indicated that Maradona wasn’t properly looked after was leaked to the media, according to ESPN. Luque performed a successful brain surgery on Maradona two weeks before his death.

Prosecutors even appointed a medical board to see if there was a possible homicide in the case, and the board reported in May that the medical professionals acted in an “inappropriate, deficient and reckless manner,” ESPN reports.

Maradona’s autopsy revealed that he died in his sleep from an acute pulmonary edema due to congestive heart failure. His family is demanding justice for those who are responsible for his death.

Maradona died in November at the age of 60.

If convicted, they face up to 25 years in prison, according to ESPN.
