C-SPAN’s Steve Scully completes his three month suspension

C-SPAN political editor Steve Scully has completed his three-month suspension period and will be returning to the network this week, according to a statement Monday.

Scully was suspended after admitting to lying about his Twitter account being hacked after a message he sent to former White House aide Anthony Scaramucci leaked.

Scully explained his actions in a statement at the time, saying the attacks targeting him caused him to act out of turn.

“For several weeks, I was subjected to relentless criticism on social media and in conservative news outlets regarding my role as moderator for the second presidential debate, including attacks aimed directly at my family,” Scully said. “Out of frustration, I sent a brief tweet addressed to Anthony Scaramucci. The next morning when I saw that this tweet had created a new controversy, I falsely claimed my Twitter account had been hacked. These were both errors in judgment for which I am totally responsible for. I apologize.”

In the statement, the network defended Scully, calling his actions “a singular episode in an otherwise successful 30-year C-SPAN career.”

C-SPAN said of Scully’s suspension that he had done his time and is now able to return to the network.

“While it was appropriate in October for Steve to be immediately relieved of his duties leading our 2020 election coverage, we reiterate our belief now that, having completed a three-month administrative leave, he can continue to contribute to C-SPAN’s mission.”

For now, Scully will be working as a producer on off-air assignments for C-SPAN television and will resume his work on C-SPAN Radio’s “Washington Today” and “The Weekly” podcast. He will not be appearing on-air as a television host for the time being.
