Presidential historian Meacham describes Trump supporters as ‘anguished’ white guys with ‘lizard brain’

Presidential historian Jon Meacham referred to President Trump’s supporters as “anguished, nervous” white men with a “lizard brain” during post-debate coverage of the second and final showdown between President Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden on Thursday night.

“I think Trump did himself good with his base tonight. The question for America is how big that base is,” Meacham said before later adding, “There is a lizard brain in this country. Donald Trump is a product of the white man’s, the anguished, nervous white guy’s lizard brain.”

Meacham, an NBC contributor and staunch critic of the president, appeared at the Democratic National Convention in August and endorsed Biden. It marked the first time he has endorsed a presidential candidate.

According to Psychology Today, the lizard brain is “the part of the brain that is phylogenetically very primitive.”

“Many people call it the ‘Lizard Brain,’ because the limbic system is about all a lizard has for brain function. It is in charge of fight, flight, feeding, fear, freezing up, and fornication,” the publication adds.

Meacham said the former vice president had asked for his endorsement, with the historian noting that “we’ve been friendly for a long time.”

“I was honored to do it, and I totally spoke from my heart, my soul, my core,” he said.

Election Day is 11 days away, with more than 47 million votes already cast in early voting.
