Spicer mocks Pelosi claim of CNN being GOP ‘apologists’: ‘Had no idea I had Wolf Blitzer in my pocket’

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer joked early Wednesday that he “had no idea” he had “Wolf Blitzer in his pocket” after Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) accused the CNN anchor of being an “apologist” for the Republican Party.

“I’m just upset. Six years at the RNC [Republican National Committee] and working with President Trump, and I had no idea I had Wolf Blitzer in my pocket the whole time,” Spicer, the host of Newsmax’s “Spicer & Co.,” said to “Mornings with Maria” anchor Maria Bartiromo on Fox Business.

“Gimme a break,” he added. “CNN is in the pocket of the president? That’s insane!”

Spicer’s comments came after Pelosi called Blitzer an apologist for Republicans while defending her opposition to a $1.8 trillion COVID-19 relief package in a contentious interview Tuesday afternoon.

“With all due respect, and you know we’ve known each other a long time, you really don’t know what you’re talking about,” Pelosi said at one point.

“What I say to you is, I don’t know why you’re always an apologist and many of your colleagues are apologists for the Republican position,” she argued later.

CNN is often attacked by President Trump for being “fake news” and biased against him, with rallygoers chanting “CNN sucks” at many of his rallies, including one on Monday night in Sanford, Fla.

Spicer often sparred with CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta and CNN contributor April Ryan at daily press briefings during his tenure as press secretary in the first eight months of 2017.

Bartiromo’s two interviews with Trump over the past week on “Mornings with Maria” and “Sunday Morning Futures” on Fox Business and Fox News, respectively, generated record numbers for the former CNBC star.

Her phone interview with Trump on Thursday resulted in the most-watched hour for “Mornings with Maria” in its history, delivering 376,000 total viewers, while Bartiromo’s “Sunday Morning Futures” interview with the president on Sunday scored 2.375 million viewers, the most-watched program on cable news that day.
