CNN’s Wolf Blitzer: ‘I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the last presidential debate’ between Biden, Trump

CNN host Wolf Blitzer said he “wouldn’t be surprised if this is the last presidential debate” after President Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden clashed in a vicious first debate.

“This was the most chaotic presidential debate I’ve ever seen and I suspect most of you, if not all of you, have ever seen,” Blitzer said. “It will certainly raise a lot of questions about the future of a presidential debate between these two candidates.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised, by the way, if this is the last presidential debate between” the two candidates, Blitzer added.

Two more presidential debates are scheduled for this year: one on Oct. 15 and another on Oct. 22. 

Later on Tuesday night, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Biden’s running mate, shot down the suggestion that Biden would back out of future debates. 

“Joe Biden’s never going to refuse to talk to the American people,” Harris said on CNN. 

The next debate will be in a town hall format, in which members of the audience will be able to ask questions.

Tuesday’s debate, moderated by Fox News’s Chris Wallace, was riddled with testy exchanges where both candidates interrupted each other and pivoted subjects. At one point Wallace scolded Trump over his repeated interruptions of Biden. 

Blitzer was not alone in his review of the debate: CNN’s Dana Bash called the debate “a shit show” and another host on the network, Jake Tapper, called it  a “hot mess, inside a dumpster fire, inside a train wreck.”

Wallace, Blitzer and his CNN colleagues have all moderated presidential debates in the past.
