WNBA postpones three more games in continuing Jacob Blake protest

The WNBA on Thursday announced that it will postpone its scheduled games for a second straight night over the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wis.

“After speaking with representatives from teams playing tonight, as well as our WNBPA leadership, the consensus is to not play in tonight’s slate of games, and to kneel, lock arms and raise fists during the national anthem. We stand in solidarity with our brothers in the NBA, and will continue this conversation with our brothers and sisters across all leagues, and look to take collective action,” said Atlanta Dream center Elizabeth Williams on Wednesday night.

The move comes as other leagues have followed suit, including the NBA and Major League Baseball.

Three NBA playoff contests were postponed on Wednesday after the Milwaukee Bucks decided to not take the floor for their game against the Orlando Magic. Four MLB games were also postponed when players decided to boycott.

The WNBA also sat out on Wednesday after originally discussing a protest at the 7-minute mark of games to mark the number of times Blake was shot by police.

Reschedule dates for all the games postponed have not been announced.

The NBA announced on Thursday that it would resume play after the two high-profile Los Angeles teams, the Lakers and Clippers, had pushed to boycott the remainder of the season.

President Trump weighed in on the NBA protests on Thursday, calling the league a “political organization.”

“They’ve become like a political organization, and that’s not a good thing,” Trump told reporters at the White House during a briefing on Hurricane Laura. “I don’t think that’s a good thing for sports or for the country.”
