Journalist covering Trump trip to Florida tests positive for coronavirus

The White House Correspondents’ Association announced Monday that a member of the press who covered President Trump’s trip to Florida last week has tested positive for COVID-19.

“We’ve already reached out to those who were in the pools with this individual, and the White House Medical Unit is conducting additional contact tracing and providing follow-on tests for those in the pools and potentially exposed,” said Zeke Miller, the group’s president.

Miller would not reveal the identity of the journalist, citing privacy concerns.

The individual was in close proximity to dozens of other members of the press at the Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Fla.

The journalist was also in the same room as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), state Sen. Wilton Simpson (R), Pinellas County Commissioner Kathleen Peters (R) and state Rep. Danny Perez (R).

The development comes as Florida health officials reported 4,752 new cases of coronavirus on Monday, along with 73 new deaths.

The number of new cases is the lowest single-day total reported in the state since June.

The death toll in Florida currently stands at 7,157, with the overall U.S. death toll topping 155,000.
