Director Joel Schumacher dies at 80

Filmmaker Joel Schumacher, who directed films including “Batman Forever,” “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “A Time To Kill,” has died at 80 after a battle cancer, his publicist confirmed on Monday.

Schumacher was also behind Hollywood hits including “The Incredible Shrinking Woman,” “The Lost Boys” and “The Client.”

He also directed two episodes of the popular Netflix series “House of Cards” in 2013.

The former costume designer had his share of hits and misses.

“Batman Forever,” starring Val Kilmer and Nicole Kidman, had the highest-grossing opening weekend of 1995. But his next Batman film, “Batman and Robin,” which saw George Clooney replace Kilmer as the caped crusader, was savaged by reviewers.

Celebrities and critics paid their respects to the New York-born director on social media.
