YouTube took the largest haul of audience of any single platform during the month of June amid a record month for streamers, according to new data from Nielsen Media Research.
The video platform earned 9.9 percent of all TV viewing audience last month, edging out Netflix which netted 8.4 percent. Other streamers, like Hulu and Disney+, ranked well behind taking in less than 4 percent of total audience share each.
Overall streamers took 40 percent of all TV viewing during the month of June, Nielsen found, compared to 27 on cable and 20 on linear broadcast.
The company noted streaming made up a larger share of younger viewers’ television time in June with school out of session, which led to a disproportionate bump from the 2-17 age demographic, including a 16 percent increase in viewing from kids aged 2-11.
Broadcast television, meanwhile, saw some benefit from viewing increases of 26 percent in sports and 5 percent in news from the previous month, thanks largely to the first presidential debate and other breaking news event coverage.
