Toobin ‘doesn’t believe’ CNN poll showing drop in impeachment support among Democrats

CNN chief legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin said Tuesday he didn’t believe “for one second” a new CNN-SSRS poll showing that support for impeachment of President Trump had dropped from 90 percent to 77 percent among Democrats.

The poll also showed that support for impeachment among all voting groups overall had dropped 5 points since last month, with 45 percent in support and 47 percent opposing, the first time a CNN-SSRS poll had support for impeachment underwater.

“I don’t believe that poll for one second,” said Toobin in a panel discussion on the network along with CNN political director David Chalian.

“What part don’t you believe?” asked CNN anchor Alisyn Camerota.

“The 90 to 77 percent,” Toobin replied. “You know, it’s just I don’t believe it. It makes no sense that that number would change like that.”

“I don’t know what’s not to believe,” Chalian injected. “You call people up on the telephone, you get their information, you pump out a survey. This is what those that we polled told us.”

“I get it,” Toobin responded. “But, I mean, life has shown us that polls are sometimes wrong, and David, that poll is wrong.”

“What do I know?” Toobin later added. “I thought Hillary Clinton was going to win in 2016.”

Impeachment polls have been trending toward more Americans opposing impeachment than supporting it, a RealClearPolitics index of polls showed for the first time earlier this week.
