Smartmatic settles defamation suit against One America News

Voting systems provider Smartmatic has settled a lawsuit it brought after the 2020 election against conservative media outlet One America News Network (OANN).

Erik Connolly, Smartmatic’s lead attorney, confirmed the company had settled with the outlet in a statement to The Hill, saying “Smartmatic has resolved its litigation against OANN through a confidential settlement.”

No further details on the settlement were provided.

OANN is just one of three news networks Smartmatic sued after the 2020 presidential election for what the company has argued was its malicious airing of false theories about voter fraud and its software.

Smartmatic still has litigation pending against cable channels Newsmax and Fox News over its coverage of the election

OANN briefly rose in popularity during and after the 2020 election thanks to promotion by former President Trump and his allies.

The network has since faced a slew of controversies stemming from its coverage of the 2020 election, segments on the coronavirus pandemic and other issues.

In July of 2022, the network was dropped by Verizon, its last major carrier and still faces similar litigation from Dominion Voting Systems.
