MSNBC cuts away, CNN carries Trump’s Super Tuesday speech in full
CNN carried former President Trump’s Super Tuesday victory speech in full, while MSNBC cut away from his remarks.
The decision comes as President Biden’s campaign has reportedly been urging media outlets and campaign surrogates to more aggressively draw attention to Trump’s public statements and rhetoric on the campaign trail as part of their reelection strategy.
MSNBC has made a somewhat regular practice of cutting away from Trump speeches, a trend host Rachel Maddow on Tuesday night noted is a decision the network “constantly revisits.”
After the network cut away, MSNBC pundits offered a series of fact checks and pushback to various claims made by Trump during his victory speech. CNN anchors also offered fact checks of the former president’s remarks and pointed out statements he made that were not true.
Fox News and cable news channel NewsNation also provided live continuous coverage of Trump’s remarks for the duration of his speech.
Trump’s allies have argued that hesitation by some news networks to cover Trump’s false statements live amounts to political censorship.
During his speech from Mar-a-Lago, Trump railed against Biden and his policies on the southern border, foreign wars and the economy, among other issues.
Trump was projected to win or had leads in nearly every state that held a GOP primary as of late Tuesday evening.
During his speech, the former president attacked the press, which he said is “getting beaten up very badly,” and said it is suffering from a credibility crisis.
