WHCD observes moment of silence for California synagogue shooting victims

The White House Correspondents Dinner (WHCD) observed a moment of silence in honor the victims of a synagogue shooting in Poway, Calif. on Saturday. 

“At this time, we’d like to give our customary toast to the First Amendment,” a speaker said. “But before we do so, I know I speak for everyone in this room when I say our thoughts go out to the victims and the survivors of the shooting in California tonight.”

{mosads} “I’d like to observe a moment of silence or a raised glass, whatever you would like, to let them know we are thinking of them as we gather here to celebrate the First Amendment,” he added. 

The room briefly fell silent following the remarks. One woman was killed and three people were injured in Saturday’s attack, which took place during the last day of the Passover holiday. A suspect has been apprehended. 

Lawmakers, journalists and celebrities attend the yearly WHCD event. President Trump has decided to skip the event for the third year in a row and urged administration officials to do the same.
