Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) addresses reporters after a closed-door House Republican Conference meeting on Wednesday, January 10, 2024.

Steve Doocy, a co-host of “Fox and Friends,” blasted the House GOP and its leadership Thursday as Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) faces strong conservative backlash over a recently agreed-to spending deal.

“The Republicans in the House are in such disarray, the Speaker of the House is hanging on to his job by a thread,” Doocy said on Fox’s flagship morning talk show.

“Please say they’re not going to go down that route again,” co-host Ainsley Earhardt exclaimed.

“They might,” Brian Kilmeade, another co-host chimed in.

“It could happen before February 1,” Doocy continued. “So the Republicans may not have the vote, even though they had the big chaotic circus yesterday.”

Thursday morning’s exchange was first highlighted by Mediate.

Questions have been circulating about Johnson’s fate on Capitol Hill this week after Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) indicated he would support a “motion to vacate,” over a recent spending deal.

Johnson came to power after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was ousted by his colleagues last fall, largely for moving a spending package to prevent a shutdown and relying on the votes of Democrats to do so.

Now Johnson is in a similar position, with a spending deal backed by Democratic leaders and a partial shutdown deadline of Jan. 19.

Some Republicans see the chatter about Johnson potentially losing the Speakership as overblown. It is an election year, and Johnson is not seen as having some of the same relationship problems as McCarthy, these voices reason, so the motion to vacate is unlikely to move forward.

At the same time, it would take only a few Republicans to back such a motion and see Johnson unseated if Democrats also support it, as they did with McCarthy.
