Security guard shot while protecting news crew in California

Police in California arrested a man late Sunday after he allegedly shot a security guard protecting a news crew that was robbed while covering the Oakland teachers’ strike.

KPIX in northern California reported that one of its crews was covering the teachers’ strike when two suspects robbed them of a camera and tripod. The employees surrendered the equipment and one of the suspects then exchanged gunfire with a guard who was accompanying the news crew.

The security guard was shot in the upper leg, KPIX said. He was taken to a hospital and is stable.

{mosads}Police later arrested a 21-year-old man who walked into a nearby hospital with multiple gunshot wounds on suspicion of shooting the security guard.

The Associated Press reported that news crews and photographers in the San Francisco Bay Area were the targets of at least a dozen robberies since 2012.

The AP reported that a KPIX cameraman was punched and had his camera stolen while filming in front of an Oakland high school in 2012.

Roughly 3,000 members of the Oakland Education Association (OEA) have been on strike since Thursday to protest low pay and a reduction in district resources.
