CNN’s Kate Bolduan chokes up while talking about Pittsburgh synagogue tribute
CNN anchor Kate Bolduan appeared to choke back tears on Friday as she spoke about the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s tribute to the 11 victims of Satuday’s mass shooting at a synagogue in the city’s historically Jewish Squirrel Hill neighborhood.
As images of the paper’s front page on Friday appeared onscreen, Bolduan pointed out that its banner included the first few words of a Jewish mourner’s prayer in Hebrew to honor the massacre’s victims. “Magnified and sanctified by Your name,” the headline reads in Hebrew.
{mosads}Bolduan’s voice appeared overcome with emotion as she explained the tribute to the victims of the shooting, which the FBI is investigating as a hate crime.
“Such a moving tribute to these people, this community, against this, [the] most deadliest attack against Jews in American history,” Bolduan said as pictures of those who were slain appeared onscreen.
The newspaper’s decision to include the Mourner’s Kaddish prayer on Friday comes a day before the Tree of Life Synagogue is set to host its first Sabbath services since the deadly shooting, which also left several people, including police officers, injured. Friday evening marks the first Shabbat service since a gunman opened fire inside the synagogue.
Robert Gregory Bowers, the man charged by police with killing 11 people inside the synagogue pleaded not guilty in federal court on Thursday. Bowers faces 44 separate counts related to the attack.
Law enforcement officials have said the suspect told police that he wanted “to kill Jews” and that “all these Jews need to die.” President Trump has called for Bowers to receive the death penalty over the attack. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
“Through the centuries, the Jews have endured terrible persecution. … And those seeking their destruction, we will seek their destruction,” Trump said this week.
“And when you have crimes like this, whether it’s this one or another one on another group, we have to bring back the death penalty.”
