A Turkish newspaper is reporting that missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s Apple Watch may have recorded his own death.

The pro-government, privately owned newspaper Sabah reported that Khashoggi manually turned on the recording function of his Apple Watch before walking into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul earlier this moth, according to CNN.

{mosads}His “interrogation, torture and killing were audio recorded and sent to both his phone and to iCloud,” Turkish media reported.

The men partaking in his imprisonment were also reportedly recorded speaking.

According to the news outlet, the audio file was sent to Khashoggi’s phone, which he left with his fiancée before entering the consulate. That is how Turkish security officials were reportedly able to find the audio.

The newspaper reported that some of the files were deleted after his attackers tried and failed to enter a password, eventually using Khashoggi’s fingerprint to unlock the watch.

CNN, however, noted that fingerprint verification is not one of the capabilities of the Apple Watch.

A representative from the company confirmed to CNN that watches do not have that feature.

CNN was not able to independently verify the Sabah report and it is not immediately clear whether the Apple Watch can transfer audio to a cellphone.

The journalist is suspected of being dead and Turkish security officials have reportedly concluded that Saudi leadership ordered his murder and possible dismemberment inside the building.

Saudi Arabia’s government has said that it has no knowledge of Khashoggi’s whereabouts and that it is just as interested about where he is.

President Trump vowed “severe punishment” if it is shown that Khashoggi’s disappearance or murder was ordered by the government.
