PBS, CBS, HBO big winners at News and Documentary Emmys

PBS, CBS and HBO combined to take home 19 awards at the 39th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards held in Manhattan on Monday, with PBS leading the way with seven wins.

The awards, presented in 49 different categories, included PBS’s win in the category of “Outstanding Current Affairs Documentary” for “Last Men in Aleppo,” a documentary that covered the civil war in the populous Syrian city in a conflict that has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands in the country.

{mosads}Other awards included “Outstanding Coverage of a Breaking News Story in a Newscast,” which was awarded to HBO’s Vice News Tonight’s coverage of deadly protests that erupted at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., in August 2017.

CNN International captured a win with “Outstanding Continuing Coverage of a News Story in a Newscast” for its coverage of the fall of the ISIS in Iraq and Syria. 

Overall, CBS and HBO were second on the award scoreboard with six wins each, followed by CNN and CNN International which each captured three wins. 

A&E, Univision, NBC, Netflix and The New York Times rounded out the top ten, with A&E winning three awards and the rest taking home two.

“I’m particularly proud to be here for tonight’s celebration of News and Documentaries, given the intersection at which we find journalism and political discourse these days,” said Terry O’Reilly, chairman of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, in a statement.

“At a time when some seek to perpetuate politically useful falsehoods in the furtherance of partisan ideology, we have never needed our nation’s journalists and documentarians more.

The event was attended by more than 1,000 television and news media industry executives, news and documentary producers and journalists at New York’s Lincoln Center, according to NATAS.
