Cavuto clashes with GOP lawmaker over Sessions

Fox News host Neil Cavuto sparred with GOP Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (Calif.) on Friday after the lawmaker attacked Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s loyalty to President Trump.

Rohrabacher, who appeared on Cavuto’s show to discuss growing tensions between Sessions and Trump, took aim at the media, blaming “fake news” for Trump’s apparent unwillingness to fire his attorney general.

Rohrabacher maintained that Trump could not fire his attorney general without a “fake news” conspiracy that would cause his administration major headaches. But Cavuto argued that the president’s power to fire a Cabinet member who had disappointed him was absolute.

“Congressman, you don’t like the guy,” Cavuto said. “You [the president] hate the guy. You think he’s a loser, a twerp, he’s not getting it done. The president apparently calls him Mr. Magoo. Then fire his ass!”

“No, no. The ‘fake news’ has created the situation wherein if the president does what’s right so that he can assume his authority as president, there will be an avalanche [of criticism],” Rohrabacher responded.

Trump and Sessions have intensified their public criticism of each other in recent days, with Trump hammering Sessions for days over supposed Democratic influence in the Department of Justice and Robert Mueller’s special counsel investigation.

Sessions issued a rare rebuke of the president on Thursday, pledging that the Justice Department would remain untainted by political bias while under his control.

“While I am Attorney General, the actions of the Department of Justice will not be improperly influenced by political considerations. I demand the highest standards, and where they are not met, I take action,” Sessions said.
