GoFundMe campaign supporting Maryland shooting victims reaches goal in less than a day

An online fundraiser for the victims of a deadly shooting at an Annapolis, Md., newspaper on Thursday has blown past its $80,000 goal and reached over $100,000 pledged as of Friday morning. 

The GoFundMe page was created on Thursday by Madi Alexander, a reporter for Bloomberg Government, in the immediate aftermath of the newsroom shooting, which left at least five people dead and several others seriously injured.

Acting Anne Arundel County police Chief William Krampf told reporters at a press briefing on Thursday that the shooting was “a targeted attack.”

The suspected gunman who was taken into custody after the shooting has since been identified as Jarrod Ramos, who reportedly sued the newspaper for defamation in 2012. He has been charged with first-degree murder.

“Please give what you can to help the Capital Gazette newsroom and their journalists,” the fundraising page reads.

“Our hearts break for our colleagues in Annapolis and we want to do whatever we possibly can to help them pay for medical bills, funeral costs, newsroom repairs, and any other unforeseen expenses that might arise as a result of this terrible shooting.”

The fundraiser continued to pick up momentum as it surpassed its original goal.
